Merrymakers of Whoopee Early Jazz of the 1920s & 30s with Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys
Saturday, September 1 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm| $20
Obscure, Naughty & Lovely Tunes of The 1910’s, 20’s & 30’s.
The enchanting and effervescent chanteuse Janet Klein performs obscure, naughty and lovely tunes from the 1910’s, 20’s and 30’s. Joined by some of her LA based band members, The Parlor Boys, you’ll be treated to spirited and inspired renditions of Tin Pan Alley, early hot jazz, vaudeville & Yiddish novelty tunes, ragtime and other rare and rustic gems.
Janet Klein has been performing her special brand of song fare since 1996. Her own unique vocal style reflects the old fashioned sweetness and titillating charm of bygone singers like Ruth Etting, Josephine Baker, Lil Armstrong and Mae West. Born in California, Klein has always felt a strong affinity to the music and culture of the early twentieth century. In addition to being a classically trained pianist, she also plays a mean ukulele and has a voice as sweet as a robin’s song on a sunny, spring morning. Be sure to take a peek at her ukulele as it is a one-of-a-kind instrument beautifully adorned with cherry blossoms.
Janet and her band regularly perform at historic theaters in Hollywood and Los Angeles and other landmark venues throughout the United States. Their CD release “Living In Sin” was voted in the Top Ten Jazz and Pop Critic’s Award Poll of the Village Voice. Look out for them all around town, from downtown at the historic Orpheum Theater or the Art Deco Cicada Club to the Old Town Music Hall, El Segundo, and at yearly festivals like “Ticket to the Twenties” at the Homestead Museum and vintage events at the Muckenthaler Cultural Arts Center in Fullerton.
